When we are sick, all we really want is to regain some sense of normalcy in our lives. The people around us are inevitably affected in some way.
We want them to be happy and in order for that to happen, we've got to get better ourselves.
A hospital visit today forced things into perspective.
When you're surrounded by the sick, the spirit sinks. It's not that you can't feel happy or hopeful,it's the difficulty of feeling so.
Recall visiting TTSH years back when RW was working there.. it was around Christmas and while it was clinical and cold, sterile, there was a keen sense of quiet calm, gratefulness and joy wafting from the volunteers' Christmas Caroling.
It's true, when you're at your most miserable and feeling so depressed, it is sometimes through helping others to feel better that we become stronger. When we see someone weaker suffering, it's almost an automatic response to become stronger for that person and lend a hand in helping.
I think we're basically all really nice people, it's just that most of us get so caught up in our lives that we end up compromising on what really matters the most.
