Hello!
Can you spot the difference between the two?
Haha... i finally had the chance to try donuts from the Donut Factory and to my surprise, i find them fresh, light and tasty and in my opinion at least, i prefer them to Krispy Kreme doughnuts!
Surprising findings? While many may beg to differ, this is simply based on the taste of the donuts. In terms of the retail experience, level of service and overall brand, of course Krispy Kreme remains tops. I recall a trip to Sydney two year's back and the service was really tip top. The entire operations of creating that one sinful, rich and luscious doughnut was recreated in the store and needless to say, made the experience all the more memorable. In contrast, down at the basement of Raffles City, throughout the 1 hour plus wait.. all we could do was entertain ourselves playing games and chatting. I have plenty of suggestions on how Donut Factory can improve their operations but i'm sure that in time to come, it might grow into something wonderful and even rival Krispy Kreme? who knows? :) The staff do have something to learn from those at Krispy Kreme, with their ready smiles, enthusiasm and exuberance. The ones we faced looked tired but put on a brave front. Perhaps it was the setting-one along a busy street in sunshiney Australia and the other holed up in the basement of a shopping mall.
As Shaun pointed out, i'm not entirely sure if Donut Factory will proceed soon to use machines in the production of their doughnuts (it would definitely help ease the workload off their staff and help the queue lines!)but would that produce the same quality? Of course there are also the costs involved. At present, the doughnuts are prepared by hand and it certainly does not seem the most efficient way.
Also took a trip down to Clark Quay to visit Central shopping centre. It was fairly quiet but that can be attributed to the fact that many outlets are not open as yet. The mall has 2 sections with one seemingly segregated as the food section. The main section has floors upon floors of shoe shops, korean inspired clothes shops.. and seriously few shops for guys! Except maybe Harvey Norman on level 4? yep.. it resembles Icon (Bugis) in several ways in terms of the decor and layout. Some of the shops overlook the Clark Quay area and have wonderful views! Giordano on the second floor even has plush couches as a seating area - perfect for waiting hubbies, friends or boyfriends.
Oh yes, one other thing, we had a snack at the small food outlet in the basement. It is similar to a 茶餐厅 and serves wonderful fried wonton, milk tea etc.. but the best part was the MAHJONG TILE she presented me that represented my order! haha i just looked at it bemused... now that's something for innovation! :)
Hopefully many more fun weekends to come!
